GREEN SMOOTHIES

Drinking green smoothies every day became a health game-changer for me 6 years ago.

One simple step to better health

Do you get at least 5 - 9 servings of fruit and vegetables on a daily basis?  Sounds like a lot right?  But our bodies need these nutrients from real, whole plants!  If you struggle to get enough good nutrition, try a daily smoothie.  (See basic recipe below)

It may look weird, but it tastes great and gets you about 3 - 5 servings right off the bat!  I have a glass for breakfast, and sometimes there's some left over to go with lunch too.  Over the 6 years I've been doing this, it really has changed my energy and how I feel in general.  Just like yoga!

If you know me as a yoga teacher, you may not know that I first started my business as a health coach.  Around age 49 after years (decades?) of erratic eating habits, little exercise, and stressful work as a CPA, I wanted to feel better in my body.  I studied holistic nutrition for myself, and decided to share it with others as a side business.

So without further ado, here it is:
BASIC GREEN SMOOTHIE RECIPE Personal tips:  Start with whatever blender you have.  I suggest you start with 1-2 cups of spinach at first and lots of whatever fruit you like until you adjust to the taste, then increase the greens over time.  You can add honey or stevia if you want for sweetness, but using a banana adds lots of sweetness and creaminess.

2 cups water (filtered is best)
1-2 cups of spinach
1 banana
1-2 cups of frozen blueberries (or whatever fruit you like)

Add greens and water and blend for 90 seconds on high until smooth.  Add fruit and continue to blend until smooth.

You can add healthy fat like avocado or almond butter, and protein powder to make it a meal replacement drink if you want.

Let me know if you want recommendations for other options and/or combinations.  There are many possibilities that can be adapted to your needs and tastes.

I like to buy fruit in season, when it's less expensive and more flavorful.  I cut it up and freeze it to use in smoothies.  This week is pineapple and honeydew melon; last week was mango and canteloupe.  Of course, you can just buy bags of frozen fruit at the grocery store.  Get creative!

Here's to yoga and smoothies for good health!
